Hinewai Clarke

 Ngāti Whātua, Tainui.
Joined the exhibition in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, in March 2023.

Hinewai is a younger woman with wavy black hair that reaches to her shoulders. Her dark brown eyes gaze directly at us, her lips are closed and her chin juts slightly forwards. Around her neck is a pounamu greenstone hei tiki.

Recalling the painful hardships she experienced in an abusive relationship, Hinewai recognises the crucial role these challenges played in shaping her into the resilient mother she is today.

With a heart full of gratitude, she acknowledges those who made this new chapter possible for her and her children and reflects on how learning te reo Māori was a doorway to getting to know her iwi and, ultimately, herself.

PHOTO PORTRAIT DESCRIPTION

Hinewai is a younger woman with wavy black hair that reaches to her shoulders. Her dark brown eyes gaze directly at us, her lips are closed and her chin juts slightly forwards. Around her neck is a pounamu greenstone hei tiki, a carved human figure that lies horizontally, close to her neck on a short black cord that is tied around its left arm.

The features of the hei tiki are concealed behind the neck of the plain white shirt she wears with the first two buttons undone.  She sits up straight, arms by her sides. Behind her is the green of grass and the sweeping boughs of a Pōhutukawa tree.
